Where Do I Take All This Stuff Before I Move? A Greater Severna Park Decluttering Guide

Where do I take all this stuff before I move?

If you have lived in your home for years, the hardest part of selling may not be the market. It may be the garage, the attic, the basement and the closets. This guide gives you a calm, local plan for donating, recycling, disposing, storing and clearing out the things you no longer need.

Updated for June 2026. Hours, accepted items and event dates can change. Always verify directly before loading your car.

Clear clutter with confidence
Donate usable items locally
Recycle or dispose responsibly
Start here

The goal is not to do everything today. The goal is to create momentum.

When a seller says, “I do not even know where to begin,” we usually recommend starting with a simple sorting system. Walk into one room, one closet or one section of the garage and make a first pass. Do not decide the fate of every family keepsake. Just move obvious items into the right lane.

For most move-outs, every item falls into one of five categories: keep, donate, recycle or dispose, sell, and store. Once you have those categories set up, the process starts to feel more manageable.

1

Do a 30-minute first pass.

Set a timer, choose a small area and remove the easy decisions first. Expired cleaning products, duplicate tools, unused decor, old electronics and furniture that is not moving with you are the fastest wins.

JHG tip: If you are thinking about selling, call us before you spend money on repairs, paint, storage or cleanout services. We can help you decide what is worth doing and what is not.

🏡Keep

Items you use, love or need in the next home.

🎁Donate

Clean, working items someone else can use.

Recycle

Electronics, cardboard, textiles, glass and accepted materials.

🗑Dispose

Trash, unusable bulk items and hazardous materials.

📦Store

Items needed later, but not during staging or showings.

Quick local cheat sheet

Where to take or donate items in Anne Arundel County

Use this as your starting point, then click through to confirm current rules, hours and accepted items.

Paint cans and household supplies

Paint, chemicals & cleaners

Use Anne Arundel County Household Hazardous Waste events for oil-based paint, paint solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, fuels and many household or automotive cleaners.

  • Latex paint is accepted at county recycling centers year-round.
  • Never mix chemicals together.
  • Keep containers sealed, upright and away from passengers.
HHW event info

County HHW events are for Anne Arundel County residents only. Commercial waste is not accepted.

Prescription bottle with capsules

Expired medications

Anne Arundel County and Maryland police departments have medication drop boxes. The closest option for many Greater Severna Park residents is Eastern District.

  • Eastern District: 204 Pasadena Road, Pasadena, MD 21122.
  • Prescription Medication Disposal Program locations are listed as 24 hours daily, 7 days a week.
  • Remove personal information from containers first.
Medication disposal

Do not place needles, inhalers, aerosol cans, thermometers, business medications or lotions and liquids in medication kiosks.

Old furniture set outside for removal

Bulk trash & large items

Sofas, mattresses, tables, plastic dishwashers and carpet rolls can usually go beside your trash container on your regular collection day.

  • Set out only three large trash items at a time.
  • Large metal items and refrigerated appliances need scheduled county pickup.
  • Wood, lumber and construction materials are not collected curbside as bulky trash.
Bulk pickup rules

For scheduled metal or appliance pickup, call 410-222-6100 or use the county online scheduling options.

Cardboard and cleanout items in a dumpster

Big cleanout loads

For large cleanout loads, the Millersville Landfill and Central Recycling Center area is the main county hub to know.

  • Millersville Landfill: 389 Burns Crossing Road, Severn, MD 21144.
  • Open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
  • Bring an Anne Arundel County driver’s license and vehicle registration.
Landfill details

Plan enough time to unload. County guidance says customers must be off site shortly after closing.

Discarded electronic circuit boards and computer parts

Electronics & recycling

Anne Arundel County offers year-round electronics collection. Residents can drop off accepted electronics at any county recycling center at no charge.

  • Common items include computers, laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, radios, cords and gaming devices.
  • TVs and monitors are accepted for disposal, but not recycled by the county electronics provider.
  • Rechargeable batteries removed from devices have special rules.
Electronics recycling

Wipe personal data from phones, tablets, computers and drives before drop-off.

What to know category by category

Paint cans and spray paint containers
Garage, shed, basement

Paint, chemicals and cleaners: separate first, then verify the right drop-off.

These are the items that slow people down because they often cannot go in regular trash. Start by sorting them into latex paint, oil-based paint, automotive fluids, lawn and garden chemicals, pool chemicals and household cleaners. Keep everything in its original container whenever possible.

Good to know

  • Oil-based paints and paint solvents belong in the HHW category.
  • Latex paint can be taken to county recycling centers year-round.
  • Unmixed motor oil and unmixed antifreeze may have year-round recycling options.

Do not

  • Do not combine leftover products.
  • Do not move leaking containers without secondary containment.
  • Do not assume a rental vehicle or commercial vehicle will be accepted.
Shelves with home goods and household items
Donate before disposal

Furniture, clothing, and home goods: decide what is donation-ready.

Donation is wonderful when the item is clean, safe and useful. It is also worth being realistic. Most nonprofits cannot accept items with rips, stains, pet damage, missing parts or safety concerns. If something is in good condition, take photos, measure it and check donation guidelines before hauling it anywhere.

Donation-ready

  • Clean sofas, chairs, tables, dressers and bookcases.
  • Working appliances that meet age and condition guidelines.
  • Cabinets, tools, lighting, housewares and home decor.
  • Bagged clothing and textiles for county recycling or donation where accepted.

Probably not donation-ready

  • Mattresses and box springs, unless a specific organization says yes.
  • Opened paint or hazardous materials.
  • Broken, stained or unsafe furniture.
  • Electronics where a nonprofit specifically says they do not accept them.
Prescription bottle and capsules
Medicine cabinet

Expired medications: remove labels and use a proper drop box.

Before showings begin, clear the medicine cabinet and any bedside drawers where prescriptions, vitamins or over-the-counter medications have collected. Remove personal information from bottles before disposal. For sharps, follow the county health department’s guidance rather than placing loose needles in trash or recycling.

Accepted in medication boxes

  • Prescriptions.
  • Prescription patches and ointments.
  • Over-the-counter medications and vitamins.
  • Samples and pet medication.

Not accepted in medication boxes

  • Needles or sharps.
  • Inhalers and aerosol cans.
  • Hydrogen peroxide.
  • Lotions, liquids or over-the-counter ointments.
Boxes being loaded into a moving truck
Heavy items

Bulk items and cleanout loads: do not let one giant pile derail the whole move.

Separate large items by destination: donate, regular bulk trash, scheduled metal or appliance pickup, landfill run, or junk hauler. This is where planning matters. The county may collect some large trash items curbside, but construction debris, lumber and certain materials need a different plan.

Curbside candidates

  • Sofas, mattresses and tables.
  • Plastic dishwashers.
  • Rolls of carpet.
  • Up to three items at a time on collection day.

Schedule or haul separately

  • Large metal items.
  • Refrigerators and other refrigerated appliances.
  • Construction materials, wood and lumber.
  • Cleanout loads that exceed normal curbside limits.

A calmer way to clear the house

Print this section or keep it open on your phone. The trick is to move category by category, not memory by memory. Sentimental items take longer, so start with the easier wins.

Garage and shed

Pull out old paint, chemicals, pesticides, fuels, pool supplies, tools, yard equipment and duplicate home improvement items. Separate HHW from donation-ready tools.

Attic, basement and closets

Sort holiday decor, old linens, luggage, frames, keepsakes, clothing and boxes you have not opened in years. Label anything that is going into storage.

Furniture and decor

Decide what is moving with you, what could be donated, what should be sold and what needs to be hauled away.

Office and electronics

Separate shredding, electronics, cords, printers, computers, old phones and hard drives. Back up data and wipe devices before drop-off or donation.

Medicine cabinet and cleaning supplies

Use medication drop boxes for accepted medications and HHW events for hazardous products. Do not pour medications down the drain.

Questions sellers ask us

Decluttering before a move, answered

Should I declutter before calling a Realtor?

No. Call us first. We can walk through the home with you and help identify what matters for pricing, photos, staging and buyer perception. You may not need to do as much as you think.

What should I remove before listing photos?

Focus on visual clutter, excess furniture, personal paperwork, crowded counters, packed closets, bulky basement items and anything that makes rooms feel smaller. A clean, open room photographs better and helps buyers focus on the home.

Should I store, donate or toss furniture?

If the furniture is clean, useful and in good condition, explore donation first. If it is valuable or unique, selling may make sense. If it is not useful, safe or clean, plan for bulk pickup, landfill, or a junk hauler.

What is the fastest way to make progress?

Choose one category, such as old paint, electronics or donation furniture. Finish that category before moving on. You will feel progress faster than if you try to touch every room at once.

Do I need professional help?

Sometimes, yes. Organizers, junk haulers, movers, packers, estate sale companies and storage providers all solve different problems. We can help you decide which one fits your situation.

Can The Jen Holden Group recommend local vendors?

Yes. We regularly help sellers connect with local vendors for cleanout, organizing, repairs, packing, moving, storage, donation pickup and prep work. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to solve.
